Backup power. Sized to the load.

Inverters, LiFePO4 batteries, UPS, generators and solar panels for an office, shop, boiler room, server room or home. We start with the list of loads and the hours of autonomy — and only then choose the equipment.

What matters

An inverter is sized by power, a battery by energy.

The inverter must carry the sum of simultaneous loads with a 25% margin and withstand the start of the largest motor: pumps, compressors and fridges draw 2–3 times their rated power at start-up. A boiler, a fridge and any equipment with a motor need a pure sine wave.

Battery capacity is calculated from the watt-hours that have to be delivered over the autonomy period: E = ΣP × t ÷ η ÷ DoD. The system voltage follows the power: up to 1–1.5 kW — 12 V, 2–3 kW — 24 V, from 3–5 kW — 48 V.

  • LiFePO4 3,000–6,000 cycles and 80–90% working depth of discharge
  • Gel and AGM for occasional outages and small UPS units
  • Solar panels 1 kW yields 4–5 kWh a day in summer and 1–1.5 in winter
  • Generator for long outages and high starting currents

Calculation

How much inverter and battery you need

Switch on what has to keep running during an outage and say for how many hours. You get the inverter power and the battery capacity.

We size the inverter with a 25 % margin over the total load and check it against the starting currents of the fridge and pumps. Capacity assumes 90 % inverter efficiency and a working depth of discharge of about 90 % for LiFePO4 and 50 % for gel and AGM batteries.

Questions

About backup power.

How many hours will the backup last?
It depends on battery capacity and load: E = ΣP × t ÷ η ÷ DoD. The calculator above gives a guide figure; send the list of loads and we will calculate it exactly.
LiFePO4 or a gel battery?
For daily cycling — LiFePO4: it delivers more from the same rated capacity and lasts 5–8 times longer. Gel makes sense for occasional outages and small UPS units.
Is a pure sine wave mandatory?
For a boiler, a fridge, pumps and any equipment with a motor or a switch-mode power supply — yes. A modified sine wave suits only lamps and chargers.
Does LiFePO4 work in frost?
It can discharge down to −20 °C but charges only above 0 °C: the BMS blocks charging in frost. The battery is best installed in a heated room.
